Since a Chef and a Cook is different in terms of job responsibility and work hierarchy, the qualifications requirement to become a chef will also be different from a cook. Other than chef and cook, there is also another type of kitchen staff called the food preparation worker who also has different job qualification requirements. We will also briefly talk about it in the following paragraphs.
When you are just starting out your culinary career, I guess the position that you will be taking will probably be a cook or a food preparation worker. The qualification requirement to become a cook or a food preparation worker is nonetheless nothing more than a high school diploma or a certificate from a vocational training school.
The diploma or a certificate is really not necessary to start out as a cook as most culinary skills are learned on the job training. But a high school diploma or at least some culinary skills learned from a vocational training school are highly recommended before starting out your chef career.

To advance your culinary career from a cook to a chef, the qualification requirement to become a chef is either a 2 year Associate Degree or a 4 year Bachelor Degree in food science or culinary arts. A college degree will teach you about basic food safety and handling procedures, cooking, and general business such as finance, marketing and computer classes which can be helpful for those who might someday want to be a chef or to open their own restaurant.
In addition, you will also get to enroll in courses that teach about nutrition, menu planning, portion control, purchasing and inventory methods, proper food storage procedures, and use of leftover food to minimize waste which are all valuable knowledge that you should acquire to become a chef.
As much as a college degree is important to becoming a chef, it may not be necessary to have it but it’s highly recommended especially if you want to work at fine-dining, upscale restaurants or a established hotel. Therefore, while you are working as a cook, my recommendation is that you can get the degree by attending college on a part time basis. It will probably be tough but it will pay off the effort in the end.
Other than a college degree, culinary training experiences are equally important as the necessary qualification requirements to become a chef. While attending college or working as a cook, you will learn good knife techniques and proper use and care of kitchen equipment. Besides, basic training in food handling and sanitation procedures, nutrition, slicing and dicing methods for various kinds of meats and vegetables, and basic cooking methods, such as baking, broiling, and grilling will also be part of the experience gained throughout your culinary career as a cook and these are all valuable qualifications that lead up to an advancement to becoming a chef.
In short, the qualification requirements to become a chef is nothing more than the valuable experiences gain throughout your work done at a restaurant, internship program at a food establishment and knowledge learned from enrolling in culinary courses in college.
